While using Ukraine dating apps can be more convenient, doing so reduces the likelihood of creating genuine connections with Slavic women searching for love. Fortunately, Ukrainian matchmakers work day and night to bring back dating events safely in the capital city Kyiv. Joe and Maryna, two souls brought together by fate and a matchmaking service, share their experience dating in wartime Ukraine.
When Joe first started writing with Ukrainian women via a PPL agency, he felt a spark—a genuine connection—and it was as unexpected as it was delightful. Joe, a gentleman from America, had been navigating the complexities of Ukraine dating through a matchmaking agency that allows communication prior to traveling via PPL writing. Maryna, on the other hand, had her own hesitations. A self-sufficient Ukrainian woman from Kyiv, was reluctant even to join matchmakers as she wasn’t entirely convinced by the promises these agencies made.
Yet, fate has its quirks.
When Maryna decided to use the service, it was more out of curiosity than hope. “I didn’t expect much,” Maryna admitted, “and when they first mentioned Joe, my initial reaction was, ‘No thanks.’”
But persistence paid off. When the service sent Maryna a picture of Joe—albeit with sunglasses, which she found a bit suspicious—she agreed to give it a try. “Who would come to Ukraine during wartime anyway?” Maryna thought. To Maryna's surprise, Joe was that kind of person.
Joe’s decision to meet Maryna wasn’t just bold; it bordered on audacious. Flying to Poland and enduring a grueling 17-hour train ride to Ukraine during a war wasn’t exactly a typical first date. Maryna herself was stunned. “I asked him, ‘Do you know what’s happening here?’” she recounted. But Joe’s determination was unwavering.
“This wasn’t about a matchmaking event or meeting multiple women,” Joe explained. “This trip had one purpose: to meet Maryna.”
When they finally met at the train station, Joe spotted Marina immediately. Stylish and elegant in a long white fur coat and dark sunglasses, she looked like she had stepped out of a magazine. But the moment wasn’t without its hiccups. As Marina rushed to greet Joe, she tripped over someone’s suitcase and landed—quite literally—in his arms. “It was like a rom-com scene,” Joe laughed. “Perfect timing.”
Their budding relationship wasn’t without its challenges. Kyiv was in turmoil. Power outages, water shortages, and daily missile attacks made even basic communication difficult. Joe found himself navigating these hurdles with Maryna by his side. “I was living on the seventh floor,” Maryna shared, “and when the elevators stopped working during blackouts, this 61-year-old man was climbing all those stairs without complaint. That’s when I knew he was serious.”
For Joe, those moments were less about endurance and more about commitment. “Every step was worth it,” he said with a smile.
Maryna, initially skeptical of matchmaking agencies, admitted that her experience with Joe changed her perspective. “I’ve seen agencies scam people, but this time it worked. If someone like Joe can travel across the world during a war to meet me, it’s proof that real connections can happen,” Maryna said.
For a tribe of men still searching for a Ukrainian wife, Joe offers simple advice: “Don’t be afraid to take a chance. Sometimes, the biggest risks bring the greatest rewards.”
